August 25, 2020What is a Personal Fashion Stylist?
When you work with a personal fashion stylist it should be a life changing moment. The stylist will concentrate on you to learn what clothes make you feel more confident, stylish and at ease with yourself.
Find your Style
My job is to learn from the things you say and how you move in clothes. I want to help you find your own style and build a collection of outfits that work for the different events in your everyday. Ideally, I want to find looks from within your existing wardrobe. At the same time, establish the missing key items that pull everything together. Often these are classic items that will become firm favourites like a blazer, a go-to dress and a shirt that’s in a colour that makes you glow. Clothes shopping becomes so much easier to locate specific items that will be worn and don’t stay with their tags on.
Yes, working with a fashion stylist, can seem daunting
Anything personal is a little daunting. Your personal space is important, so chatting before your appointment is key to express how you feel and areas you are less confident about. My passion is to make a difference in your life through clothes. I tend not to focus on trends but well made, beautiful and classic pieces that last. Your unique style will develop with details like colour combinations, accessories, footwear and small styling tweaks that I will teach you.
How does it work?
During the session, we are also decluttering older, unwanted clothes that need to be recycled. I will advise you on the best options, whether that’s preloved shops, charity or designer resale.
I will suggest and pin alterations. One of the biggest mistakes is not shortening sleeves as this makes such a difference. I am also known to make soft furnishings out of beautiful fabrics when the life of the garment has ended. There are so many options to remake and re-love clothes which is an area I want to encourage to help the environment cope with fabric waste.
To remind you of outfit combinations and new styling techniques, I always take a lot of photographs during your session. I will also help you locate outfits for special occasions that need a step up from everyday looks. How to dress up for work or an event, but still keeping your key style proportions and colours is also key.

My story. How I became a Personal Fashion Stylist.
I have loved fashion since an early age. My mum taught me to sew and in my teens I made my own clothes, often copying styles I coveted from Top Of the Pops. Clothes I wanted were not available at a price I could afford so I was able to express myself and learn a skill at the same time.
My path took me to study four years of Fashion Design, then shifting to fashion and homes styling with Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home magazines. Back to design for a while with my own boutique, where I designed one-off outfits and a ready to wear range. Once I started my own family I moved to Personal Shopping with House of Fraser in Guildford. After 14 years working with real people, not models, my careers moved forward as a freelance stylist to help clients love their own style.
I would love to work with you to find your full potential. I do realise the first step is often difficult but let’s start with a few emails before moving on so I can reassure you that this is the right step for you.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Kirstie xx
